A Statement of Purpose - Part 5

'to share Christ's message and love with the local and wider community'

A STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
“ We at St Matthew's are a fellowship of Christians committed to placing God at the centre of our lives. We exist to follow Christ's example and to share his message and love with the local and wider community.

Last month we thought briefly about the statement ''to follow Christ's example' and we move on to think what it might mean to 'to share Christ's message and love with the local and wider community'

The first Christians had some ups and downs- no change there for us today!  They enjoyed meeting together but they were also very clear that they shouldn't stay put.  Jesus himself had said: 'go into all the world and make disciples of all people'  (Matthew 28 verse 19).  He had also sent his friends out from him to follow him in preaching, healing, getting rid of the demons that plagued people and caring for the outcasts.

So when it comes to founding a church group without him there in person they had to put some of this love of Christ for them into action: 'they had everything in common; selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need....and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved' (Acts 2 verses 44,47)

It clearly wasn't right just to enjoy their own little 'club'.  They believed that Jesus was God's son and that they needed to go his way to get the best out of life and be forgiven for failing to live up to his character.  Yet the prime example of Jesus was a loving one, so they had to show that to others.  The message about God needed to be heard.  But just as in our own day, it won't cut much ice with people if it isn't lived out.  Being generous, caring for those on the margins, the sick, the bereaved, the lonely – it was all important.  They did that not only for their near neighbours but for those in other parts of the known world at the time, even collecting money to help out people who were struggling from severe famine in another place (see 2 Corinthians chapter 8)

So today, we at St Matthew's need to be unafraid to SAY what we believe and we need to be loving in showing that we will DO the things that fit with our beliefs in Jesus Christ, both in our local community and, wherever possible, in our wider world.
